Bluff Creek Bridge Open |
Despite the winter weather, including historic ice storms that created havoc over the entire Midwest, the construction of the Bluff Creek Bridge on 178th (Edmond Road), just east of Meridian, officially opened after a final state inspection on April 22. Oklahoma County started the project in September 2007 and planned to open it mid-March 2008, but inclement weather earlier that same month delayed the final inspection date by several weeks. The old bridge was built in 1935 for an area considered primarily farmland. With the growth of Oklahoma City and Edmond, the bridge became a point of concern; the concrete was crumbling, critical angles on the steel beams were deteriorating, and the roadway was subject to serious flooding. With a look toward the future and continued growth, the bridge now has four lanes, spanning 225 feet, complete with sidewalks and handrails. In addition, higher placement over the creek bed and improved channel capacity will help reduce flooding during heavy rains. |
