The Honorable Bernard M. Jones, II was nominated by the bipartisan Judicial Nominating Commission and subsequently appointed District Judge for Oklahoma’s 7th Judicial District by Governor Mary Fallin on September 14, 2012. Upon taking the oath of office on October 1, 2012, Judge Jones became one of the youngest judges to have ever served in Oklahoma history. In 2014, he was elected, without opposition, to a full four-year term to the bench.
A native Oklahoman, Judge Jones was born and reared in northeast Oklahoma City. He attended Millwood Public Schools and Corpus Christi Catholic School before graduating from Bishop McGuiness High School. Upon graduating, he attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and was elected President of the SMU Student Body, among other noteworthy achievements. For his service to the SMU community, Judge Jones was awarded SMU’s prestigious “M” Award, as well as its John L. Freehafer Memorial Award. Following SMU, Judge Jones attended law school at the University of Notre Dame where he was selected for membership on the Moot Court Trial Team, and was elected President of the Black Law Students’ Association.
Judge Jones began his legal career as an associate practicing commercial and labor and employment litigation first at Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, LLP in Columbus, Ohio, and later at the Oklahoma City office of McAfee & Taft, Oklahoma’s largest law firm. Following a successful litigation practice, Judge Jones was recruited to the administrative faculty at Oklahoma City University School of Law where he attained the rank of Associate Dean. During his tenure in academia, Judge Jones also accepted appointments to serve on the Oklahoma Board on Legislative Compensation as well as the Board of Adjustment for the City of Oklahoma City.
Active in the community, Judge Jones has served on the boards of directors for numerous not-for-profit organizations. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City, Director and Youth Protection Champion for the Boy Scouts of America’s Last Frontier Council, Secretary of the St. John Christian Heritage Academy School Board, and as a Trustee of the Ralph Ellison Foundation. He previously served on the boards of directors for Sunbeam Family Services, the Metro Tech Foundation, Oklahoma Lawyers for Children, the American Cancer Society, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network, and Freedom School Oklahoma City. Judge Jones is a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma City (Class 30), as well as Leadership Oklahoma City’s LOYAL Program (Class 3). He is a member of Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Alpha Theta Boulé).
Judge Jones has been recognized by the Journal Record, Oklahoma Magazine, and OKC Biz as one of Oklahoma’s Achievers Under 40. He is the recipient of the Journal Record’s Leadership in Law Award, the Ada Lois Sipuel Fisher Diversity Award, the John A. Reed, Jr. Spirit of the Community Award, and the Boy Scouts of America’s Whitney M. Young, Jr. Service Award. He has been recognized as an African American History Maker by Southern Methodist University. And, in 2013, Notre Dame Law School selected him as its Alvin J. McKenna Alumnus of the Year.
