Formerly named Civil Defense, the Emergency Management Department is the lead agency for minimizing the effects of natural or man-made disasters or other emergencies in central Oklahoma (Played a critical role the organization of programs following the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building.). The office prepares and implements emergency operational plans, conducts, training, and coordinates emergency response and recovery programs. With the largest volunteer staff in the State, the department has been recognized for its severe weather spotter program. The office maintains a communications system for all County agencies and also provides equipment to local fire departments.
