The trail will be utilized by the school’s physical education program and provide students with a safe area in which to exercise. In addition to the uses for the physical education program, the area will allow students to have recess outside when wet playground conditions would have previously prevented them from going outdoors

The project, a partnership between Oklahoma County and the Choctaw Nicoma Park School system was made possible by a state law that allows counties to use their labor and equipment on school owned property. Roth, who was instrumental in the passage of the law, said that prior to the passage of Senate Bill 237 during the 2003 legislative session, partnerships such as this would not have been possible. “I am extremely pleased the legislature recognized the valuable role county government could play in assisting local schools”, Roth said. “District 1 is excited about our role in this effort, our crews love this type of work…helping the kids.”

Funding for the school’s portion of the project, used to cover material costs, came from fundraisers conducted by the students and Westfall P.T.O. In addition to the fundraisers, several local businesses provided assistance as well. “Our students are to be commended for their hard work and dedication to this project, said Principal Callaway.”

Speaking on behalf of Choctaw Nicoma Park School’, Dr. McCharen thanked all those who were involved in the project. “I would like to thank Commissioner Roth and District 1 for partnering with us to build this wonderful trail for our students.” McCharen concluded, “We are very fortunate to have great students, parents, faculty and staff, and community support for our district.”
