The American Indian Cultural Center, with a target opening date of 2009, will be located on approximately 300 acres of land to be donated by the City of Oklahoma City at the intersections of I-35 and I-40 in downtown Oklahoma City .
Architects and museum designers have completed a master plan that reflects Native American culture and traditions of water, wind, fire and earth, the circle and sun cycles. It will provide places for social gathering and sports events.
There will be galleries and theaters to see and hear projected images, sound and light effects, and an introduction to orient visitors to the cultural history and importance of the Oklahoma Native American tribes. The Cultural Center will focus on themes of Identity, Memory, Community, Ethos, Continuity and Equity.
A Family Center, featuring hands-on activities such as storytelling, quilting and beadwork craft will be another point of interest.
The Center will be located in a setting of woodlands, plains and wetlands, with a lake extending the entire length of the site. Trees and plants native to the area will make up the landscaping.
A 200-room lodge hotel and conference center plus a 125-room motor hotel will accommodate visitors to the area with an arts and crafts marketplace nearby. Also available will be a 300-space RV and tent campground with a large area reserved for traditional dance gatherings and casual recreation.
