Oklahoma Governor's Mansion

The Oklahoma Governor's Mansion located just east of the Capitol is a historic, three-story building constructed of Indiana limestone to match the Capitol building. It was erected in 1928 at a cost of $75,000 with an additional cost of $25,000 allowed for furniture, landscaping, grading and paving.

The 19 room mansion has an interesting mixture of historic furnishings, art and artifacts on every floor. The first floor contains a living room, dining room, sun room, library, breakfast room and kitchen. On the second floor are five bedrooms, three baths, an office and sleeping porch. The third floor contains a ballroom and storage rooms. The laundry, furnace and boiler are located in the basement.

In 1995, the mansion underwent a $1 million renovation paid for with private donations. Furnishings were refurbished or replaced with the emphasis on elegance and history. The mansion was featured in Architectural Digest's April, 1997 issue as one of Oklahoma 's top tourist sites. It was described as “stately but welcoming, elegant but robust and quirky as the state's boom-and-bust history, the mansion has been transformed from generic blandness into an Oklahoma icon.”

An annual Oklahoma Heritage celebration at the Capitol was begun in 1993 by then First Lady Rhonda Walters and in 1997 was reinstated on the Mansion grounds by First Lady Cathy Keating and dubbed ‘Septemberfest'. It is an annual entertaining and educational festival honoring Oklahoma culture, history and art. Admission is free and entire families are encouraged to attend for the fun hands-on events, historic displays, and the special Oklahoma talent. The Governor's Mansion remains open for public touring during the entire day.
