Wiley Post AirportThe Wiley Post Airport, named for the internationally known Oklahoma aviator who was the first person to fly solo around the world, is a haven for business, corporate and general aviation travelers. One of three airports owned and operated by the City of Oklahoma City and the Oklahoma City Airport Trust, it is designated as a reliever for Will Rogers World Airport. Located in Bethany at 5915 Phillip J. Rhoads Ave., it hosts a full-service control tower that operates daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. It has both parallel and cross wind runways. The longest is 7,200 feet by 150 feet, with a precision ILS approach. Its parallel has recently been extended to 5,000 feet. Wiley Post Airport is always eager to participate in civic and aviation activities. Two events in particular have become Wiley Post traditions. Armed Forces Day is a tribute to our uniformed services and is held each May. Displays of World War II aircraft highlight the event. Open to the public at no charge, it is sponsored by the Commemorative Air Force Oklahoma Wing. Wiley Post Airport hosts the Okie Derby every August. The event is an aircraft race from Wiley Post to various checkpoints around the state and back to Wiley Post. But it's not about speed alone. It challenges the pilots' accuracy in predicting fuel burn and estimating their time of arrival at each check point. Source: www.wileypostairport.com |
