Legal Rights

1.    You have the right to talk with a lawyer. Your lawyer will be either from the Public Defender’s Office or one hired by your parents. You have the right to have phone calls and visits with your lawyer, between the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Your lawyer will handle any legal complaints you may have. Juvenile Detention provides a grievance (complaint) procedure, which you can use to voice complaints about Detention.
2.    Telephone Calls: When you come into Detention, you may call your lawyer or the Public Defender’s Office, if you ask. If you can’t get hold of your lawyer, your parents or guardians should try for you. You will also have other chances to call your lawyer if you ask.
3.    You may write or ask someone to write a message to your lawyer. The message will be given to your lawyer and will not be read by staff.
4.    Visits With Lawyer: Your lawyer may visit you between 9:00am through 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. If you want to see your lawyer or your worker, Detention staff will let them know, providing it is during office hours.
