The Oklahoma County BridgeBuilders Program is the result of the award of a Federal Grant from the United States Department of Labor to Oklahoma County Board of Commissioners on behalf of the Oklahoma County Department of Training and General Assistance. The purpose of the grant is to end the dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation and work. The name selected for the program was BridgeBuilders and the vision was of a collaborative partnership that was community and family oriented. The focus of BridgeBuilders is on recipients of Temporary Aid for Needy Families (TANF) with substance abuse or other mental health challenges who are nearing termination of assistance, and those who are considered long-term recipients. Ancillary to those categories are non-custodial parents identified with TANF cases, certain non-TANF recipients (aged-out foster care youth and low income custodial parents). BridgeBuilders is designed to holistically address the personal as well as the infrastructure barriers experienced by the target group in their journey toward self-sufficiency through employment and abstinence from drug and alcohol abuse.
