The Tactical Unit handles situations which require specialized equipment and training including barricaded suspects, hostage incidents, and execution of high risk arrest or search warrants with the sole objective to save lives using modern tactics, team work, and special equipment. The Sheriff’s Tactical Unit has primary responsibility for all unincorporated areas and Tinker Air Force Base and assists other agencies. The Tactical Unit consists of 18 deputies and 6 support personnel including a doctor, a respiratory specialist, a tactical paramedic, negotiators and the agency Chaplain. The majority of training is provided by our own certified instructors whose areas of expertise include firearms, defensive tactics, chemical agent deployment, less-than-lethal weapons use, emergency driving, tactical search and clearing procedures and officer survival. Since 1997 training has been doubled from 8 to 16 hours monthly, new protective body armor and other specialized equipment has been purchased.
