Traffic Safety Unit

The Traffic Safety Unit consists of 7 deputies under the supervision of Sergeant Darrell Sorrells. The first traffic unit was created in 1997 with the first Highway Safety grant ever awarded to the Sheriff’s Offices to hire the deputies and purchase 3 cars and 6 motorcycles. The unit identifies high traffic crash locations involving injury or fatalities and places special emphasis on crash-causing violations. Working with other law enforcement agencies throughout the county, this unit is responsible for a continuing reduction in traffic crashes and deaths. In 1998 the unit made 149 DUI arrests.
