Commissioner Carrie Blumert Sponsors Resolution Recognizing National Suicide Prevention Week in Oklahoma County 

Oklahoma County – Following a motion by County Commissioner Carrie Blumert, the Oklahoma County Board of County Commissioners approved her resolution declaring the week of September 10th thru 17th as Suicide Prevention Week in Oklahoma County.  Suicide Prevention Week is part of a larger, month-long, focus on reducing suicide risk and death, as well as the importance mental health treatment and support.

Commissioner Blumert, a vocal advocate for improved mental health services in Oklahoma County, and a principal architect of Oklahoma City’s Maps 4 Mental Health initiative, talked about the importance of raising awareness and de-stigmatizing mental health issues. 

“I want every resident in Oklahoma County to know that suicide doesn’t have to be the answer to their situation. There are resources and people available to help, listen, and connect you with treatment. There is no shame in asking for help” said Blumert.  She continued, “Suicide prevention is a community responsibility.  Educate yourself on what community resources are available before you or a friend or family member are in a crisis.” 

Joining Blumert at today’s meeting were several representatives from mental health and substance providers in Oklahoma County, including 988 Oklahoma and the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Servies Office of Suicide Prevention. 

Also in attendance was John Geddes, the son of Julie Geddes, a long-time suicide prevention professional who passed away earlier this year. Commissioner Blumert said that Julie Geddes worked for the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services in suicide prevention across the state of Oklahoma for almost three decades.  Blumert noted that she and Julie had a close relationship, and she was honored that John was present for today’s meeting.
